Scraplift Challenge #1

We like scraplift challenges because there are so many layouts available online to be inspired by. Isn't this layout by Tina Aszmus so fun and colorful? We found it via the Studio Calico blog and love both the design and that Tina used minimal embellishments, yet her layout looks amazing!

Katie's Layout: I copied Tina's layout almost exactly, but here's what I changed up:

• I converted it into a 12x12 layout.
• I used watercolor pencils and gelatos instead of water color crayons to color my speech bubbles.
• I stamped in a few of my speech bubbles.
• I added glitter into my speech bubbles, using a bit of glue + white glitter.
• I doodled my own speech bubbles instead of using a mask/template.

 Just like sketches, scraplifts are an easy way to speed up the design process of a layout! I think this is a really fun design. If you're a clean and simple scrapper and don't like to use paints or messy supplies in you layouts you could easily cut speech bubbles from patterned paper instead of drawing them or you a piece of patterned paper that already has speech bubbles printed on it.

Emily's Layout: I love the layout we chose to scrap-lift for this challenge! It was so much fun to work with. In my layout, I used patterned paper (from Lawn Fawn's first line, Bright Side) for the speech bubbles. I also changed the location of the journaling.



I decided to make a few of my speech bubbles from white card stock to add a tone-on-tone element to the page. I stamped this little rose from the Amy Tangerine Yes, Please clear stamp set in the white bubbles to add some interest to them, and then I popped them up with foam adhesive for dimension and to define them a bit more.



This might seem like a simple layout to lift, but there are so many directions you can take it in! We can't wait to see how you use it.

Kill a Kit Challenge #1

One of the fun challenges we are doing here on Paper Lovers Studio is the "Kill a Kit" challenge. How does it work?? Simple:

We will be putting together our own kits to use and posting them once a month. The next month, we will post the projects we've made from the previous kit and post our next kit.

We would love to have you join in! Create your own kit and link up your projects!

Katie's Kit:

To make my kit, I started by going through my patterned paper stash and choosing a bunch of sheets that I thought could go well together. I included papers from Nikki Sivils, Amy Tangerine, Dear Lizzy, DCWV and a few others.

For embellishments I am using a couple of sets of Thickers, 1 sheet of chipboard stickers, spirograph stamps, 2 rolls of washi tape and my Amy Tangerine phrase stamp.

I plan on making atleast one layout with this kit and definitely a couple of cards. I love these colors.

Emily's Kit: Most of my paper is already in collection packs or pads, because I find it very easy to work that way. But I still wanted to put together a custom collection of patterns for this challenge, so I pulled together papers from a couple older My Mind's Eye collections as well as some from a Recollections (Michaels' store brand) collection. I picked 9 papers in all, and then added a set of Thickers, a smaller set of alpha stickers, a stamp set from Studio Calico and a larger one from Lawn Fawn, and two rolls of washi. The colors in this kit are very different from what I've been working with lately, so I'm really excited to take on the challenge to get this kit used up!

Freebie Friday! Watercolor Journaling Tags

Twice a month on Paper Lovers Studio, We will post Freebie Fridays! Freebie Fridays will include free downloads that we have designed for you to use in whatever projects you like!

Today's download is by Katie:

I love the texture of watercolors so I wanted these tags to have that. I also added what I think is my "signature style" which is doodling. I usually doodle with a black pen or marker, but I decided to change things around and doodle with white. I think the white doodles look fantastic against the watercolor backgrounds.

Katie's Layout:
I had a hard time choosing which one of the three tags to use on this layout because they all matched my paper beautifully! I finally decided on the noteworthy tag, I liked the yellow-y green colors.

Card Sketch #1

Today's challenge is a card sketch. Just like the Layout sketches, feel free to change it up to suit your style, use it as a starting point or stay with the design in the sketch!

It's a fairly simple card sketch, a few banners, a sentiment and a place for a stamped image, patterned paper, embellishment, etc! You could also change this into a layout sketch, placing a photo where the image is.

Katie's card: I love this bicycle stamp which is from the same stamp set as the Radio stamp (from the Tough Supply Challenge) and I also have this fun black and white bicycle patterned paper, I think they go together quite nicely. For my color scheme I decided to go with pink, black and white, following the sketch and adding a little bit of bling for embellishment.

Cards are fun for when you don't feel like creating a whole layout. I love making small projects like cards, they're quick, easy (most of the time) and they usually turn out pretty cute!

Emily's card: I decided to flip Katie's sketch over so that I could make a portrait card instead of a landscape one. It was a simple card to make, yet I'm so in love with it! I used three coordinating patterned papers from My Mind's Eye and the big camera stamp from the Amy Tangerine Yes, Please clear stamp set. I think this sketch would be great for mass-producing cards, because it comes together quickly and looks great. Link up your project! We love seeing your different takes on our sketches!

Color Challenge #1

Do you ever have a great idea for a layout, but have no idea what color scheme you want to use? Us too. That's why color challenges are fun, You can start off with the simple colors provided, and add in more colors if you wish!

If you ever need help putting color together, check out the site Design-Seeds. You'll find design ideas, color palettes, and so much inspiration for color.

Katie's Layout: I chose the color palette for this challenge and as soon as I saw it, I thought about a mini paper pad I have from MyMindsEye. The colors matched almost perfectly and I added a few brighter colors with washi tape and flower stickers from Amy Tangerine.
The hexagon and bumble bee stamps are also from MyMindsEye.

I like that I've got just a few bits of black here and there, I think they really stand out and give some focal points to my layout.

Emily's Layout: I'm not usually the best at color challenges, because I have a somewhat limited stash! But when Katie sent me the color scheme for this one, I was immediately reminded of the Echo Park Sweet Day papers that I picked up in digital form when they were on sale last summer. I only occasionally dabble in digital, but it's a great thing to try for challenges like this, when you don't have any real papers that fit the colors.
 
 I think my favorite part about this layout is how I did the journaling. I added a piece of "vellum" (just a white rectangle with the opacity set around 60%) over the patterned paper and then pulled out my Wacom Bamboo graphics tablet to write my journaling just like I would on a regular layout!

Tough Supply Challenge #1

Every scrapbooker has one: that stamp set, embellishment pack, or sticker sheet with something totally awesome on it that you love, but can't figure out how to use. At least, we do! So to help you (and ourselves!) in the everlasting quest to use your stash, we've created the Tough Supply Challenge. Pick out something you love, but have trouble using, and get it on a project! This time around, we realized we both had the same stamp set with a cute little radio that neither of us had ever been able to incorporate into a project. What a coincidence! So we did our best to get that little guy inked up...

Katie's layout: I've had this stamp set for a while and I've used all of of the stamps except for the radio. I think it's adorable I just couldn't ever come up with a project for it.. until now. I didn't have any pictures that really went with the radio stamp, but I decided to use it on this layout about my new shoes, as well as using a couple of Amy Tangerine Stamps. I was trying to make a "hipster" layout, with my bright shoes, and the bright patterned paper I think it all goes together.

Katie's card: I used a light pink patterned paper for the base of my card, but I used all of the same patterned papers and washi tape as my layout to embellish it. I used the sentiment "you rock" to go with the radio stamp. I love the colors.

Emily's layout: When we first decided that we would both use the radio stamp for this challenge, I immediately thought of this random photo I had of my headphones and my boyfriend's headphones lying on the table together. It's just an "everyday" sort of photo, with no real story (hence the lack of journaling) but I like to scrap those sometimes.



I used some older My Mind's Eye paper, washi, Thickers in "Goodness", and the ampersand stamp from the Amy Tangerine Ready Set Go stamp set.



Emily's card: For my second project with the radio stamp, I decided use the same papers I used in my layout! I kept it super simple with this card, but I think it came out pretty cute. Handwritten sentiments are the easiest way to make a card look truly custom-made for the recipient!

Sketch Challenge #1

Our first challenge here on the blog is a sketch challenge! Feel free to interpret the sketch how you want, changing it up here and there to fit your style!

I (Katie) really love following sketches. Deciding how I want to design my layout is the most time-consuming thing for me when I'm scrapbooking and sketches take all the hard work right out of it!

Katie's Layout:
I took these cloud photos a couple of weeks ago and I wanted to scrapbook them using different shades of blues and of course, lots of cloud embellishments. The cloud rub-ons are an older embellishment by Studio Calico, the cloud paper and the stitching template are by Amy Tangerine. I love the new embroidery templates!

Emily's Layout: Katie created the sketch for this challenge, and when she sent it to me, I was totally inspired--but I also knew that I was going to be changing it up quite a bit! I only scrap traditional pages in 8.5x11, first of all, and my stash of photos is all 4x6s because that's the easiest for me. So, here's my page:


And here are the changes I made to the sketch:

• I used 1 photo instead of 3
• I added an extra layer of patterned paper in place of the extra photos
• I did my journaling directly on the layout, instead of in a journaling box
• I added embellishment near the title and the journaling to complete a visual triangle

I really like this page! I've been meaning to scrap this photo of the Denton Courthouse and the lights for a long time. I used papers from the Amy Tangerine Sketchbook collection, and the houses are stamps from her Ready Set Go collection.
